Vineyard walking and tasting tour from Vienna
The German name for Vienna is Wien. Rearrange that and you get wine. Need I go on? If so, then consider that Vienna is surrounded by renowned wine regions, from the sun-baked Burgenland to the South-east, to the Wachau Valley out west.
Indeed, Lower Austria is the cradle of Austrian viticulture, so you will hike through the beautiful vineyards of its Thermal Region, just south of Vienna, which is home to traditionally quaint wine villages and some interesting endemic varietals.
Start in the lovely spa town of Baden, once a favourite country retreat of Beethoven. Meander through the classic Biedermeier village centre and its gorgeous parks before entering the vineyard landscape. During the walk, you'll take regular breaks, including one at a local forest hut atop a hill to appreciate the beautifully expansive views, and another one to taste wine while chatting with local vintners about how grapes and vines are cultivated.
Reach the lovely wine village of Gumpoldskirchen and stop at one of its traditional Austrian wine taverns. Consider following a short trail created by local winemakers to discover yet more about regional wines or a quick visit to the wine museum. Continue your winery tour by visiting another local producer for a second tasting.
