An excursion out of Yangon to Bago leaving at 8:30 am taking approximately 1 1/2 hours North of the city. Formerly known as Pegu, it is one of Myanmar’s many ancient capitals and is a real treat for those who want to experience the look and feel of a forgotten era plus take a break from the bustling streets of Yangon. It has a high density of treasure-filled temples and golden Buddhas and amongst them you will find the famous Shwe Man Daw Pagoda, credited with being the tallest pagoda in Myanmar. Although it has been through many renovations due to several earthquakes, some of the original structure, from the 10th century, is still present today. You will also see Shwe Thal Yaung reclining Buddha, amazingly lost for hundreds of years before being discovered by an English railway contractor in 1881. Bago Market is definitely worth a stop, even if you are not going to buy anything as walking through here you will see fresh fruits, vegetables, spices and other local products being sold. Lunch will be provided at a local restaurant and your informative guide will be accompany you throughout the day to make sure you don’t miss a thing, before your return journey back to your Yangon hotel.
