In the 16th to 17 century, the Portuguese arrived in Zanzibar and succeeded to establish relations with the local ruler of the Island. They established Christian Missions and trading center. Christians are present in Zanzibar Island but their number is small.
Zanzibar was a major market for ivory and slave trade of the East African coast during the 18th century. In 1837 the Sultan of Oman has decided to transfer his capital from Muscat Oman to Zanzibar Island. The Sultanate rule ended up in 1963 after the revolution of Zanzibar took place.
Zanzibar Island is a World Heritage Site town. This beautiful Island has a lot of places of interest to visit and see. Among those places include:

The Anglican church, a former slaves market,
The Portuguese Old fort
The Shangani settlements
The Darajani Market
