The best things to do in Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen is a small village located in the central part of Switzerland in the Canton of Bern. It is one of the most beautiful but also one of the most touristic villages in Switzerland. It is located in the picturesque village of 72 waterfalls offering breathtaking views. In clear weather, the peak of the famous Jungfrau mountain is visible from the Lauterbrunnen. There is only one street with dozens of buildings, a souvenir shop and a grocery store. Despite its small size, there are many interesting things to do in Lauterbrunnen.

Lauterbrunnen is one of the most beautiful places in Switzerland. Indeed, a picturesque village surrounded by mountains is worth a visit at any time of year. If you are travel to Switzerland in summer, Lauterbrunnen is a great place to visit. The best time to visit Lauterbrunnen during the warm season is from May to September. At this time of year, the average temperature is 13-15 degrees. Lauterbrunnen has an ocean climate and it rains here quite often. In winter, this Swiss village is perfect for winter sports. The temperature drops to -3 degrees in January.

Visit Mürren

Mürren is a traditional mountain village in the canton of Bern, situated in the Jungfrau ski region at an altitude of 1650 m. Modern Mürren is known for hosting the Alpine Skiing World Championships in 1931 and 1935. Also, every winter since 1928, Mürren hosts the world's longest downhill for professional skiers. In fact, it is a traditional peaceful and very calm Swiss village. There is even prohibited the movement of automobile transport.

Why to visit Mürren?

Take a cable car to the Schilthorn

From the mountain village of Mürren, you can go to one of the peaks of Europe - Schilthorn. The top of the mountain located at an altitude of 2970 meters can be reached by cable car. The ride takes 32 minutes, during which you can see the mountains Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. On the Schilthorn is also situated a unique restaurant which is a rotating platform with a 360-degree view of the Swiss Alps. Indeed, the Piz Gloria restaurant offers its visitors breathtaking views of the Bernese Alps. In fine weather, 800 alpine peaks can be seen from here. It is named after the 1963 James Bond novel and the subsequent film, Her Majesty's Secret Service. The restaurant is famous for the shooting of this film there in 1969.

You can get to Mt Shilthorn from Interlaken. The cable car to an altitude of 2970 m begins in the town of Stechelberg and includes 4 stops. The place is famous for its panoramas of the Alps with Mount Jungfrau, Eger and others. The idea for the cable car belongs to former sportsman Ernst Feutz. Construction lasted from 1963 to 1967, but there was not enough money for the final design of the revolving restaurant. The problem was solved with the budget of the film "At Her Majesty's Secret Service".

Trummelbach Fall

The famous waterfall situated in Lauterbrunnen reaches a height of almost 150 meters. It is called Trummelbach Fall and it is the end of the rivers Mönch, Eiger and Jungfrau (each of them has a length of about 4 kilometers). This waterfall has a water consumption of is 20 thousand liters in one second! Every year, more than 20 tons of stone is washed out by water. Today this waterfall is open for visitors. At the beginning of the 20th century, in 1913, artificial tunnels were built here, specially equipped with lamps for travelers. The name of the Trummelbach Fall fully describes it and is translated as "rattling drums."

Wengen village by train

Wengen is a village in the Bernese Alps in the Jungfrau region, located at an altitude of 1274 m. Tourism in Wengen began in 1859, when the first hotel was built in the village. In 1890, a railway was built to Wengernalp, which still works. There are no roads and cars in the village. Today Wengen is a traditional alpine village and a popular tourist destination. It offers stunning views of the mountains and the valley of 72 waterfalls. You can reach Wengen by train from Interlaken or directly from Lauterbrunnen.

Every January, the famous Lauberhorn race is held in Wegen. It is one of the stages of the World Cup Race, which includes downhill and slalom for men.

Visit the swimming pool

Few people know, but in the village of Lauterbrunnen there is a municipal pool. It's a great idea to spend a relaxed day at Lauterbrunnen. If you are traveling in Switzerland by train or hiking in the mountains, here you can stop for one day and relax. The water in the pool is cool enough, but cosy enough to swim. Also, there are small pools and equipment for children. You can enter it directly from the village, just follow the signs "Swimming Pool" or ask locals. The price of a similar ticket is 6 CHF and the time spent in the pool is unlimited. It offers stunning views of the valley and waterfalls.

Grindelwald village

Grindelwald is one of the most beautiful alpine villages located in the center of Switzerland in the Bernese Oberland region. This fabulously picturesque mountain resort is the largest in the region. It is interesting, that the first cable car in the Alps, leading to the Wetterhorn, was built in Grindelwald in 1908. And in 1912, the railway from Grindelwald through Kleine-Scheidegg reached Jungfraujoch. Today the Top of Europe" is the highest mountain railway station in Europe. Also, Grindelwald is one of the most popular villages among tourists in Switzerland. It has a developed infrastructure, many cafes, restaurants, and hotels. You can easily get here from Lauterbrunnen by train. The trip will take about 40 minutes.

Paragliding

Paragliding is an extreme sport that is free-flying with a parachute which is controlled by a wing. The beautiful Lauterbrunnen Valley is a great place to see it from a bird's eye view. There are few paragliding schools in the village that offer their services as professionally trained pilots. By the way, for the first flight experience is not required at all. Walk to the Staubbachfall

Another famous waterfall in the Lauterbrunnen Valley is the Staubbach waterfall. The height of it is about three hundred meters. This is the second-highest falling waterfall in Switzerland. This is a very beautiful waterfall and the Swiss are so proud of this attraction. Staubbachfall was even printed on stamps in Switzerland. To get to the waterfall, you need to take a train from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen. After arriving in the village, it will take you about 15 minutes to walk to the waterfall.
